A New Era is Dawning
For those that have followed the professional darts scene over the years, we are about to witness something that hasn’t happened in well…I can’t remember when. Phil “The Power” Taylor is about to drop out of the top ten in the world. Phil is currently sitting at number 8 in the world, a mere £1,750 in front of Michael Smith and Jelle Klaasen, and less than £5,000 in front of Raymond van Barneveld. With the Austrian open only a week away, we could very well see The Power out of the top ten before month’s end. This is something that has never happened in the PDC before.
Now, we all know that it is his decision to retire and cut back on tournament appearances over the last few years that has led to this. His play is still up there with the best. He made the quarter finals at the 2017 William Hill World Darts Championship and finished third in the Betway Premiere League averaging nearly 100 for the league. Yet his time is coming to a close. For the first time since it was introduced, Phil didn’t represent England at the World Cup. Dave Chisnall took Phil’s spot, not his place, and did quite well. I must say, it was quite interesting watching Adrian Lewis play with someone other than The Power.
As I said, it “may” happen as early as this month, or it could be a while yet. I haven’t seen the entries for the Austrian Open yet, so if the three trailing him aren’t there, Phil will keep his spot. I just thought it was interesting to see, and to watch the changing of the guard, so-to-speak. I would really like to make it to Las Vegas to see him play in the US again. I won’t be able to, but if you can I would suggest you do it. The chance may not come again.
